Nike is proud to present the latest addition to the Protro family: the Kobe 8 Protro Halo. This triple-white colorway serves as a tribute to the great Kobe Bryant and his iconic basketball career.

Vanessa Bryant, in partnership with Nike Basketball, dreamed up the Halo shoe concept and launch to honor Kobe’s birthday every year. This special annual release will pay homage to the significant day.

- The Nike Kobe 8 debuts as a Protro in the Halo colorway, celebrating Bryant.
- Partnering with Nike Basketball, Vanessa Bryant imagined and created the Halo shoe concept and launch as a way to honor Kobe’s birthday each year. The Halo concept will be an annual release that will honor and celebrate this special date.
- Designers replaced the Lunarlon midsole with Nike React foam, allowing for better comfort and responsiveness and creating a more durable design overall. Also updated is the herringbone traction pattern and the embroidery of the Swoosh on the upper and the Mamba logo on the tongue.

The Nike Kobe 8 Protro sports the same recognizable design, but with modernized features. Most apparent of these is the embroidered swoosh on the upper and a Mamba logo on the tongue.
Additionally, the Lunarlon midsole has been replaced with Nike React foam, providing improved comfort and responsiveness. The herringbone traction pattern was also improved for better grip and control. Altogether, these updates make the Kobe 8 Protro a more durable and functional sneaker.
The Nike Kobe 8 was initially released in 2012 and has been seen since in both the Prelude Pack (2014) and Fade to Black Collection (2016). This year, the silhouette made its Protro debut.
At the time of its launch, the sneaker was the lightest in the Kobe line, reflecting Kobe’s need for footwear that felt like a natural extension of his feet. The upper presented a design that highlighted his ‘Black Mamba’ persona.
In honor of Kobe Bryant’s birthday on August 23rd, Nike is hosting a two-day youth basketball tournament in Los Angeles at Crypto.com Arena. Teams of the most talented high school boys and girls will compete for the Mamba League Invitational title, culminating in a championship game on Mamba Day – August 24th.
